## Definition:

A rational number is a number that can be expressed as a fraction. It can also be represented by decimal numbers that are either terminating or repeating.

## Summary:

**Long division method** is one way of converting rational numbers to decimal numbers. The quotient of long division method is in a decimal form that either terminates in zeros or eventually repeats.

**Decimal Representations of Rational Numbers**

- All repeating and terminating decimal numbers are rational numbers.
- Rational numbers can be easily represented by decimals just by dividing the numerator by the denominator.

**Terminating decimal** – decimal representation that contains finite decimal numbers after the decimal point.

**Repeating decimal** – also called recurring decimal. Decimal representation that repeats infinitely. A bar ( ) above the number indicates that the number repeats and doesn’t end.

## Examples:

**Terminating Decimal**½ = 0.5

**Repeating Decimal**⅓ = 0.3333333
